"Starbase" St Mary's Complex Needs Resource Base

At the heart of the school is St Mary’s Complex Needs Resource Base – ‘Starbase’. The resource base can accommodate up to ten children with a range of complex needs.

Starbase is a well-established base with highly skilled specialist teachers and teaching assistants who are dedicated to supporting pupils to develop all aspects of their learning within a caring and protective environment.

The base combines specialist teaching and a high staff/pupil ratio to give children the best possible start to their education.  The curriculum is taught at a level and pace appropriate to the children’s complex learning needs, with an emphasis on basic literacy, numeracy and social skills. Strengths are built upon and difficulties are addressed through group work and individual learning programmes.  Children are able to access a range of additional activities including horse riding and specialist PE lessons.

All the children are linked to one of the mainstream classes and spend each afternoon with adult support in their link class. They take part in class assemblies and a wide variety of activities and visits with their class.

Starbase aims to provide an atmosphere where children feel secure and motivated, and where expected standards of behaviour are made clear. The staff work hard to develop each child’s self-esteem and their understanding of trust, respect and consideration for each other’s points of view. Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour and move towards independence and self-reliance wherever possible.

The school places great emphasis on a positive ongoing partnership with parents and other professionals working with our young people.
